Melk

The small town of Melk in Austria is best known for its Abbey, that sits atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the town and the Danube river. The Abbey contains the tomb of Saint Coloman of Stockerau and the remains of several members of the House of Babenberg, Austria’s first ruling dynasty.

Though an abbey was founded in 1089, when Leopold II gave one of his castles to Benedictine monks from Lambach Abbey, the existing Baroque structure was built between 1702 and 1736 to designs by Jakob Prandtauer. Today, the Abbey still houses a school, now coed, with over 800 students.

Near the entrance to the Abbey are its beautiful gardens.

The fragrant rose garden lines the path to the balcony, with its panoramic views of the town and river.
