Down the Rhine to Düsseldorf

davidl5012

We left the Netherlands via a canal to join the Rhine. We noticed the entrance to the Rhine when we went through the first lock.

The stretch to Düsseldorf is largely industrial. We passed coal processing plants, nuclear power plants, factories, and many, many barges transporting all kinds of goods.

We began to see some houses and signs of urban life

Having docked at Düsseldorf the ship displayed the German flag.

Alice and I sat down on a bench, and I noticed this beautiful building. The architecture from earlier times has characteristic touches of originality. It is always fun to look up and discover.

Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia.

We stepped inside this chapel dedicated to St. Joseph. Attached was a Christian education center.

And this gorgeous building, the Lion House, bears the date of 1288 which was the date of the founding of Düsseldorf, and is an excellent example of Medieval German architecture. (The city of Düsseldorf is 733 years old.). It bears the name Lieferhouse (delivery house), It is the oldest secular structure in the city. The building core Is Gothic.
